I purchased my MacBook Pro in October 2014. It's running OS X 10.10.4 'Yosemite'. Can I update iMovie to the latest version at no charge?

Apple today updated iOS video editing app iMovie to version 2.3, introducing a number of new features to the app. There's support for viewing, editing, and sharing High Dynamic Range videos from. Version 8 of iMovie is not compatible with El Capitan so you need to upgrade to iMovie 10.1.2. Sign in to the App Store and look under purchased Tab. Find iMovie and Garage Band. If they are not there it may be that free upgrades are not available from iMovie 8. I am not sure about that. They are free from version 9. IMovie for iOS and iMovie for macOS are designed to work together. You can start cutting a project on your iPhone, then use AirDrop or iCloud Drive to wirelessly transfer it to your iPad. You can also send a project from your iPhone or iPad to your Mac for finishing touches like colour correction and animated maps. Welcome to Apple Support Communities. I understand that when you try to update iMovie on your Mac you're prompted to accept the application on your account page in the App Store. I also see that after accepting the app, you're still unable to update and prompted again to accept the app. I can see why you'd reach out about this; I'd like to help. First, if you haven't already, try these steps:
- Open the App Store and go to your account page to accept the app
- After accepting, attempt to update again.

Apple Imovie Updates
In addition to a notable update to Final Cut Pro X, Apple has also announced updates to iMovie for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. iMovie for iPhone and iPad has added new filters, 25 new soundtracks, and more. iMovie on the Mac has also added new filters as well as improved integration with iMovie for iOS.
For iPhone and iPad users, iMovie has three new filters that give videos “a hand-drawn look.” There are also 25 new soundtracks to choose from and a variety of bug fixes and performance improvements. Here are the release notes for the iPhone and iPad update of iMovie:
- Give your videos a hand-drawn look with 3 new filters: Comic, Comic Mono and Ink
- Choose from 25 new soundtracks — in genres including action, chill, and sentimental — that automatically adjust to match the length of your movie
- Addresses an issue that could prevent the viewer from updating after duplicating a photo in the timeline
- Improves reliability of Redo when editing a trailer
- Includes performance and stability improvements
